Do I need to visit a testing center to complete the Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) exam?
No. The AFTR course is considered complete once the tax preparer passes the included 100-question exam. The exam is administered online by IRS-approved continuing education providers, such as La Rusa, and follows strict IRS content and formatting guidelines.
What does the AFTR course include?
The 6-hour AFTR course is structured around three core domains:

What is the duration and format of the course and exam?

What if I don’t pass the exam?
Participants are allowed two attempts to pass the same version of the exam, provided no feedback is given between attempts. If both attempts are unsuccessful, the preparer must complete the exam again using a substantially different version.
What is the deadline to complete the AFTR course for the upcoming tax season?
- The AFTR course becomes available June 1 each year.u2028
- To qualify for the Record of Completion, it must be successfully completed no later than December 31, 2028
- Records of Completion are issued as part of the PTIN renewal process.
Do I need to have a PTIN before taking the course?
Yes. You must have an active Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) to ensure your course completion is reported to the IRS.
Can I skip the course and just take the test?
No. IRS rules require completion of the entire 6-hour course. You cannot bypass the instruction and go directly to the exam.
I'm a Licensed Tax Consultant or Preparer in Oregon. Will the AFSP course count toward my CE requirements?
Yes. La Rusa is an IRS-authorized continuing education provider, and our AFSP courses are also recognized by the Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners.

Oregon-based Licensed Tax Consultants and Tax Preparers must complete 30 hours of CE annually, including 2 hours in ethics/professional conduct. AFSP courses from La Rusa can be applied toward these requirements.
